Kudos to Katie C - i just felt like it was time to post something about this person. She is a friend - a colleague - a character - and gone.
Why kudos? I guess I would say maybe because she successfully made it through the MSU EJ program- and to do so she had to really persevere as it was not all she hoped it would be ... and she still accomplished good things while there. She would deny it - actually probably would argue it too - she IS fairly adept at arguments - I think she enjoys a good one - but anyway, she did good work - she was independent and efficient and responsible - and improved so many aspects of the magazine, web and even our PR.
Katie is done - she graduated - no picture of cap and gown yet - but i know she finished. She also received the best graduate student award for the whole J-school this year. She didn't know if she even wanted it - glad she took it though - best speech in many a year. But still she is gone - and some of us are wondering if we will ever have another student like her. So kudos to Katie - and good luck and best wishes.

sigh. you are too good a cheerleader for me. i love you, babs -- not just for these comments, of course, but for all the love you've shown me these past two years. your encouragement really was the thing that kept me at MSU -- that, and of course D's wonderfully snarky ways -- and despite some of the negative feelings I've expressed about the program, I'm glad that I stayed in the end ... so I have you to thank for that. And for so many other things that I can't think of at this late hour in the middle of nowhere in Louisiana...
More to come. Oh, and I even have a REALLY cool gift waiting for you in Michigan ... whenever I actually return to the no-left-hand-turn, mitten-shaped state. :)
And, yes, I do love a good arguement with a good opponent. Few can outtalk Babs. :)
Katie left without saying goodbye??
answer to katie- no katie (pitakate) did not leave without saying goodbye - as we are not considering her departure final yet - but it is close. If the good job happens (and I hope it does as she deserves it)then she will be gone from the area soon.
BUT ... we expect to get together when she gets back up here to pack up her stuff at least. Sadly, we really will miss her though
and to pitakate - i expect you to come back to visit - as often as you can. and there is always california next fall...
